Presentation to W Bro. Philip Timms

On Thursday 22nd May, our Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. Archie Torrance, visited W Bro. Philip W.B. Timms PPrGMO at his home in Chatham, Kent. The purpose of the visit was to present Philip with a certificate from the MW Grand Master, HRH Prince Michael of Kent, to mark his 50th year as a Mark Master Mason.

W Bro. Philip Timms, who is 94 years old, was born in Towcester in 1919. He was educated at Hemel Hempstead Grammar School and served in the Territorial Army before the Second World War. He worked for a time in the Watford Council Treasurer’s Department before signing up for military service.

At the outbreak of WWII he served in the Army and was sent to France with the British Expeditionary Force. He transferred to the Royal Air Force and trained in Canada as a pilot whilst the Battle of Britain was at its height. On return to the UK he was posted to a Typhoon Fighter Squadron.

Phil was shot down twice by the enemy but lived to tell the tale. On one occasion he spent three days at sea in a dinghy believing he was heading for the coast of England only to find that he had landed in France. Rather than risk putting the French family that looked after him in danger he gave himself up to the occupying German forces and spent two years in Stalag Luft 1 prisoner of war camp before being liberated by Russian forces.

Phil is rightly proud of his military service and has an impressive display of memorabilia on the wall above his fireplace, which he was very happy to be photographed in front of.

He went on to become Town Clerk and Chief Executive of Rochester City Council before retiring in1974. He married Kathleen Mayo in 1943 and has three children – Ann, John and Andrew.

W Bro. Timms was initiated into Freemasonry in 1960; exhalted into the Royal Arch in 1963; and then advanced as a Mark Master Mason in Pentangle Lodge No. in April 1964. He is a Grand Officer in the Craft and Royal Arch. He currently holds the rank of PPrGMO in the Mark Province of Kent.

The PGM was delighted to present W Bro. Timms with his 50th year certificate in the presence of W Bro. Ivor Patrick, Worshipful Master of Pentangle Lodge, and several other Lodge Members. The citation was kindly read by W Bro. David W. Miller in a warm and sincere manner. The PGM was accompanied by W Bro. Greg Dunham, Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies.

Many congratulations to Phil on this award, which represents wonderful service to Mark Masonry over the last 50 years.
