On Thursday 26th April 2012 at the Grand Master’s Lodges of Instruction Festival, members of Lord Harris Mark and Royal Ark Mariner Lodges No. 1494 took the opportunity to have their photograph taken in front of the portrait of Lord Harris, which hangs in the Grand Temple at Mark Masons’ Hall, London. They were delighted to be joined by RW Bro. Roger Croucher (Provincial Grand Master) and RW Bro. Roland Wade (Past Provincial Grand Master), both of whom are Honorary Members of the Lodge.

The Rt. Hon. The Lord Harris, C.B.E., M.C., D.L., was born George St. Vincent Harris on 3 September 1889. He was educated at Eton College and graduated from Christ Church College (Oxford) in 1914 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Royal East Kent Yeomanry. He fought in the First World War and was awarded the Military Cross. He was a Justice of the Peace for Kent in 1919. He succeeded to the title of 5th Baron Harris of Seringapatam and Mysore in the East Indies and of Belmont in the County of Kent in 1932. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant for Kent in 1936. He graduated again from Christ Church (Oxford) with a Master of Arts Degree in 1968. He died on 16 October 1984.

Lord Harris was Provincial Grand Master for the Provincial Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of Kent having been Installed at Canterbury on 6th November 1936. He went on to become Deputy Grand Master and subsequently Grand Master in 1954, a position he held for the next nineteen years.

The portrait hanging in the Grand Temple shows the very distinguished Lord Harris in his Mark regalia. He is the man after which Lord Harris Lodge of Mark Master Masons and Royal Ark Mariners is named and with whom the members of both Lodges are very proud to be associated.

Our grateful thanks go to W Bro. Bob Tuthill for his patience and for marshalling us appropriately so that this moment could be captured in photographic form.

W Bro. Archibald I. Torrance, PGStwd
Assistant Provincial Grand Master
Past Master, Lord Harris Lodge of MMMs No. 1494
