Several years ago the Provincial Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of Kent was very fortunate to have had a stained glass window installed in one of the function rooms at Mark Masons Hall, St. James’s, London. A second window was made at the same time and presented to VW Bro. Keith Lilly Past APGM, who was then the Provincial Grand Secretary. Both windows were made by W Bro. Barry Schmid, assisted by W Bro. Barry Planner.

This second window was located for many years in the entrance foyer of Oakley House in Bromley. However, about four years ago, when the building was being refurbished, it was removed and a new home for it needed to be found. In the interim, the window was stored safely by our Provincial Grand Tyler, W Bro. Brian Meeres, and until a new home was identified.

Earlier this year, as a result of an approach by our Provincial Executive, the Management Committee of Shirley Woolmer Masonic Hall gave approval for our window to be installed in a prominent position in the ante-room of their building in Church Road, Sidcup. Not only that, they also agreed to arrange for all of the works to be carried out and to fund those works themselves, with no financial burden falling on our Province at all!

On Monday 21st November 2011, following the meeting of Saye and Sele Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners No. 309, a large group witnessed the dignified unveiling of the window by our Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. Roger Croucher. Also present were VW Bro. Keith Lilly, W Bro. Archie Torrance APGM, W Bro. Roger Odd PrGSW and several active officers of the Province. Representing the Shirley Woolmer Management Committee were Nick Murphy (Secretary), George Beatty (Treasurer) and Bro. Trevor Jones who had acted throughout as our main contact point. W Bro. Barry Schmid was unable to be present due to ill health but he was represented by W Bro. Barry Planner.

Our stained glass window is quite magnificent and is displayed in a wonderful setting, the Shirley Woolmer Masonic Hall having been fully refurbished in recent years. The Provincial Grand Master and his whole team are delighted with this happy ending and are extremely grateful to the chair of the Management Committee, Ray Larkin, and his colleagues for their most generous support.

W Bro. Archibald I. Torrance PGStwd, Assistant Provincial Grand Master
